Digital Waste Tracking by Sector
Digital waste tracking by sector looks very different for a skip hire firm, a scrap metal yard and a waste oil collector, which is why every app we build is bespoke. Find your sector below to see how digital waste tracking applies to you and what your app could do.
Digital Waste Tracking by Sector and Business Type
Digital waste tracking by sector works differently depending on whether you're a waste receiver, a carrier, a broker or a dealer. A permitted recycling site has different reporting obligations to a skip hire firm or a scrap metal dealer, even though both will eventually need digital waste tracking.
We build bespoke apps for waste receivers, carriers, brokers and dealers across every waste stream, so whatever sector you work in, the system reflects how your business actually operates rather than a generic template.
Waste Receiving Sites (Phase 1)
Waste receiving sites with an environmental permit or waste exemption are first into mandatory digital waste tracking, from 1 October 2026 in England and Wales and 1 January 2027 in Scotland and Northern Ireland. This covers transfer stations, recycling and treatment facilities and other permitted sites that take in waste from carriers.
Waste Carriers, Brokers and Dealers (Phase 2)
Waste carriers, brokers and dealers follow in Phase 2, planned for October 2027, with a private beta from autumn 2026 and a public beta in spring 2027. This phase affects a much larger group: an estimated 300,000 registered carriers, brokers and dealers across the UK, from one-van operators to large fleets.
Collection Sectors
Collection businesses, including skip hire, grab hire, commercial waste collection, house clearance and food waste collection, typically register as carriers. They'll need to report waste movements and, where they also hold a site, receipts too. A bespoke app ties routes, driver jobs and reporting together so nothing is logged twice.
Recycling and Treatment Sectors
Recycling and treatment sectors, such as metal recycling, wood recycling, WEEE recycling and anaerobic digestion, usually operate under a permit as waste receivers, putting them in Phase 1. These sites need accurate EWC coding and weighbridge data feeding straight into Defra reporting.
Hazardous and Specialist Waste
Hazardous and specialist waste streams, including scrap metal, end-of-life vehicles and hazardous waste carriers, carry extra record-keeping on top of digital waste tracking, such as consignment codes and hazardous property details. These sectors need an app that captures that detail without slowing drivers down on site.
