Report Receipt of Waste Deadline: The 2 Working Day Rule Explained
The report receipt of waste deadline gives you 2 working days, excluding weekends and bank holidays, starting the day after a load arrives. So waste received on Monday must be reported by 11:59pm on Wednesday, and a Friday load is due by 11:59pm on Tuesday.

Report Receipt of Waste Deadline Explained
The report receipt of waste deadline gives you 2 working days to report each load. The count:
starts on the day after
you receive the waste
excludes weekends
excludes bank holidays
in the nation where your site is
ends at 11:59pm
on the second working day
The deadline applies to every load. It isn't a weekly or monthly return, so sites need a way to capture and submit records continuously.
Worked Examples: Monday, Friday and Bank Holidays
Monday receipt: waste received at 9am on Monday. Day 1 is Tuesday, day 2 is Wednesday. Report by 11:59pm Wednesday.
Thursday receipt: day 1 is Friday, then the weekend is skipped, so day 2 is Monday. Report by 11:59pm Monday.
Friday receipt: the weekend is skipped, so day 1 is Monday and day 2 is Tuesday. Report by 11:59pm Tuesday.
Bank holiday Monday: waste received on the Friday before a bank holiday Monday. The weekend and bank holiday are skipped, so day 1 is Tuesday and day 2 is Wednesday. Report by 11:59pm Wednesday.
Bank holidays differ between nations. Scotland has its own dates, such as 2 January and St Andrew's Day, and Northern Ireland has St Patrick's Day and 12 July. Use the bank holidays for the nation where your site is. Our free deadline calculator does this for you.
What Happens During a Service Outage
If the digital waste tracking service is unavailable, you must:
- 01
Make and keep a written record
of each load within the normal 2 working days from the day after it was received, containing all the required information.
- 02
Transfer that record to the service within 7 working days
starting from the day after the outage is resolved.
Your software should handle this automatically, queuing records and sending them once the service returns. See our guide to digital waste tracking outages.
Corrections After Submission
Mistakes happen, such as a wrong EWC code or weight. If you find an error after a record has been submitted, correct it as soon as you can using the service or your software, and keep a note of what changed and why. Check the latest Defra guidance for the current correction process.
The best way to avoid corrections is to validate records before submission, checking that every EWC code is valid, every waste has a disposal or recovery code, and hazardous and POPs details are complete.
How Software Keeps You Inside the Deadline
Two working days isn't long, especially across a weekend, during holidays or when the person who does the admin is off. Good software takes the deadline off your mind:
Records are drafted automatically
when a load is ticketed or a collection is verified
Validation catches missing data
before submission
Deadlines are calculated
using the right bank holidays
A dashboard shows
what's due today and what's at risk
Alerts warn you
before a deadline is missed
Offline queues
keep records safe if your connection or the service goes down
Our bespoke apps include all of these as standard.
